Inner City Melbourne Is Songwriting Capital of Australia

Melbourne has been confirmed as the songwriting capital of Australia with the inner-city suburb of Brunswick containing the greatest concentration of songwriters in the country.

The top three songwriting suburbs in Australia, Brunswick, Northcote and Fitzroy North/Clifton Hill, are all clustered in inner Melbourne.

Sydney owned the no 4 and 5 places with Bondi and Newtown/Enmore coming in next.

Brunswick is home to the most Alternative, Blues & Roots, Classic and Pop & Rock writers. Bondi is the home of Electronica, Screen, Urban and World writers and most Metal writers are living in Newtown/Enmore.

Not surprisingly, the sedate surrounds of Byron Bay is home to the most New Age writers. What is surprising is that the largest concentration of Country writers is in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote, not the country music capital of Australia, Tamworth.

Comparing Sydney to Melbourne, Sydney has the most Dance and Electronica writers while Melbourne has a concentration of Pop, Rock and Alternative.

“The data indicates that Melbourne’s inner North has firmed as the national songwriting capital over the last decade,” APRA AMCOS Principal Data Analyst Andrew Harris said in a statement, adding “but digging into more recent trends there are emerging signs that the inner West of Melbourne and parts of South East Queensland are songwriting growth spots to look out for in the near future.”
