Jackson Browne and Loretta Lynn will be honored by The Americana Music Association with Lifetime Achievement Awards for 2014.
Jackson Browne will be presented with the Spirit of Americana Award, Free Speech in Music award, co-presented with the First Amendment Center. Browne was chosen for the myriad of causes for which he has worked throughout his entire career, including Farm Aid, Amnesty International, MoveOn.org’s Vote For Change, nukefree.org and Musicians United for Safe Energy.
Loretta Lynn will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. Even with her humble beginning, Lynn rose to the apex of country music without compromising her ideals, writing songs on a variety of controversial subjects including The Pill, Rated X and Don’t Come Home Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On My Mind).
Taj Mahal will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Performance for his fifty years of advancing folk, blues and African music to the masses through his recording, touring and work with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Etta James, Ali Farka Toure and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Flaco Jiménez will receive the award for Lifetime Achievement as an Instrumentalist. Described as the “most accomplished and in-demand conjunto tejano accordion player of all time”, Jiménez helped spread the Latin style through work with such artists as Doug Sahm, Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, Dr. John and the Rolling Stones.
Jed Hilly, executive director of the Americana Music Association, said “These artists have not only influenced the Americana community, but the musical landscape as a whole. They all have been an inspiration to our community and we are humbled they will honor us in song at the Ryman this fall.”
The honours will be presented at the 13th annual Americana Honors and Awards ceremony on Wednesday, September 17 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
