James Corden is hoping to get musical icon Barbra Streisand to do karaoke when he hosts the Tony Awards.
Corden will present the prestigious theatre awards show on Sunday (12Jun16). James has enjoyed huge success with the Carpool Karaoke segment on his chat show, and is considering introducing a similar concept at the Tonys.
“I thought, ‘Why don’t we have a big, sort of karaoke-type sing-along in the Beacon Theatre?’ ” James said during an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday night (08Jun16). “Because there’s all these incredibly talented people in there.”
Among James’ dream karaoke contenders is Barbra, who will be among the biggest guests at the event.
“So I might go out and give them some drinks and then see if I can get, like, Barbra Streisand to sing something,” he smiled.
However, fans of the show may be left disappointed as James vowed the star-studded sing-a-longs will only happen during “commercial breaks” in the CBS broadcast. The former Gavin & Stacey star is also hoping to get the celebrations started early with some musical interludes before the awards begin.
“We’ll have our own show that no one (at home) will see,” James said.
But Seth warned: “This is a great idea, but here’s my genuine fear – if Barbra Streisand is singing, and then you say, ‘No, you have to stop because the show’s coming back on, (everyone is) going to be mad at you.”
James laughed that getting Barbra to belt out a tune is unlikely to happen anyway, adding: “The truth is it’s more likely going to be me and my dad singing You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.”
James’ father will be pride of place in the audience, alongside his mother. During their trip to New York, James was hoping to get them free tickets to critically-acclaimed musical Hamilton. But even his position as Tonys host couldn’t swing him entrance to the Broadway show.
“I was gonna get my parents tickets. They fly in on Friday, I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll get them tickets to Hamilton. I’m the host of the Tonys, I’ll be able to pull some strings… $1,500 (£1,036) each! No, I’m alright. I’m good.”
