James Garner, star of Maverick and The Rockford Files, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 86.
James Scott Bumgarner was born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1928. He is first known as Bret Maverick in the 50s western-comedy Maverick. The series ran from 1957 to 1962. He also had a cameo in the Mel Gibson movie of Maverick in 1994.
Garner had his biggest hit as detective Jim Rockford in the Rockford Files from 1974 to 1980.
His other movie roles included ‘Victor Victoria’ in 1982, ‘Tank’ in 1984 and ‘Space Cowboys’ in 2000.
Garner met his wife Lois Clark in 1956 and married her 14 days later. They were still together right up until his death on Saturday, two years shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.
James Garner’s last major movie role was as Old Noah Calhoun in The Notebook. In recent years he was a voice-over actor for animated shows such as ‘Superman/Shazam! The Return Of Black Adam’ in 2010.
