James Mercer plans to release old material, and will record another album with Danger Mouse as Broken Bells.
Mercer spoke to The A.V. Club about The Shins’ first album in five years, Port Of Morrow.
Along the way he divulged that he has been listening to old music recorded on a four-track in his home studio in the mid-‘90s, and said he’d like to release some of it, possibly on his Aural Apothecary label.
Mercer said, “I was just listening to some old tapes from ’95, ’96, when I was learning how to record on 4-tracks. And there’s some cool stuff there. There’s definitely some things I would like to put out maybe as some sort of unreleased rarities-type thing.”
He’s in talks to release “a compilation of stuff” from his band before The Shins – Flake – which featured former Shins members Jesse Sandoval, Dave Hernandez and Martin Crandall.
And he also confirmed that he will write another Broken Bells album with Danger Mouse, once the touring commitments for Port Of Morrow have been honoured.
As for his primary concern, he said “I certainly hope it’s not another five years” before releasing another Shins album.
