Jane Fonda has recalled the time she went for a naked swimming session with Michael Jackson and Greta Garbo.
The legendary actress has worked with many big names during her illustrious career. But one of her favourite moments involved a young King of Pop and the iconic Swedish actress while they filmed1981 movie On Golden Pond.
“Michael Jackson came and stayed for ten days on the set,” she told an audience at the Loyola Marymount University School of Film & TV as part of the Hollywood Masters series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We lived together. I went skinny dipping with him. Also, by the way, with Greta Garbo. He wanted to be a movie star — he had just finished doing The Wiz.
And he had a tape recorder with him, and every day I would bring him to the set, and in between scenes (Katharine Hepburn) would sit down in a chair and pull over a chair for him and tell him stories.”
Jane loved working on the movie as she got to star alongside her father Henry Fonda in what would be his final film, as well as Katharine who holds the record for the most Oscar wins by any actress. Jane also has two Academy Awards under her belt and was nominated for her third gong for her role in On Golden Pond. Henry and Katharine were also acknowledged by the Academy and won in their respective categories. Despite missing out herself, Jane called Katharine to congratulate her, and got a classic response from her spirited co-star.
“Neither of them were there, they were too sick,” she recalled. “I called her the next day to congratulate her. You know what she said to me? ‘You’ll never catch me now.’ And it took me a second to realise what she was talking about. She’s so competitive. I had two, she had three. If she hadn’t won and I had we’d be tied. Now she had four, there’s no way I’m going to catch up to her. Such a character.”
