Janet Jackson stunned commuters in New York City on Saturday (18Aug18) by taking public transport to host a surprise block party.
Janet Jackson dropped Made for Now, her first new single since 2016, on Friday and marked its launch by debuting the Daddy Yankee collaboration on TV with a performance on America’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The gig marked her first late-night appearance in 14 years, and kicked off a weekend of celebrations for the R&B superstar, as she also announced plans to host a block party in the city as part of the annual Harlem Week event.
“#Harlem come dance with @daddy_yankee and me this Saturday at our #HarlemWeek block party…!,” she posted on Twitter on the eve of the bash. “See u there (sic).”
Fans flocked to the street party, and some were even lucky enough to share a ride with Janet and Daddy Yankee, as they decided to shun private transportation to join members of the public on the New York City subway as they headed to the neighbourhood.
Shocked commuters shared video footage of the celebrity sighting on social media, with clips showing Janet smiling and greeting fans as she rode down an escalator with a pair of security guards and waited with the crowds on the train platform.
Meanwhile, the singer, 52, was the main attraction at Harlem Week, where she hit the stage with Yankee to belt out her new tune, and was also presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from officials at the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, recognising Janet’s monumental career success as part of this year’s theme, Women Transforming Our World: Past, Present and Future.
