With backing band The Dempseys, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi performed a rousing rendition of the Elvis tune ‘I Want You, I Need You, I Love You’ for George and Laura Bush in Memphis.
PM Koizumi is a self-confessed Elvis fan, even sharing a birthday with the King. In his last trip of the US as Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Koizumi expressed his desire to witness first hand the shag carpeting, sequinned jumpsuits and platinum records of Graceland.
High-octane rockabilly trio The Dempseys were thrilled to perform for the visting dignitary. “The Prime Minister was clearly having a great time with the band,” noted drummer Ron Perrone. “He clapped and cheered after almost every song. We’d be delighted to be his backing band anytime.”
