Jimmy Barnes ‘Flesh and Wood’ tour was indeed special.
Barnes has cast aside the full-tilt rock band for an intimate insight into the workings of his songs, with the acoustic ‘Flesh and Wood’ shows. The result is remarkable. This was truly a unique show.
As the name suggests, the ‘Flesh and Wood’ tour is based on Jimmy’s 1993 acoustic album of the same name featuring some old, some new, some borrowed and some blues.
A few of the original guest artists from the album made the night extra special. Ross Wilson, who wrote and sang on ‘Hell of a Time’ on the album was there to recreate the song live. Michael Spibey of The Badloves stepped up to relive ‘The Weight’. The Barnes and Badloves version was a Top 10 hit in Australia in 1993.
The family were up for duets as well with wife Jane, daughters Mahalia, EJ and Elly-May and sons Jackie Barnes and David Campbell showcasing their lungs across the evening.
Jimmy treated the show like it was in his lounge-room, telling tales from the past as he journeyed through his musical history. We heard stories about pals Michael and Frank, recording with legends like Joe Cocker, growing up in Adelaide and performing in the early days at the notorious Largs Pier Hotel. There was the one about that issue with the heart, the admission that he once sang in his school choir and all those songs, so many, many songs.
This was a marathon show for Barnes, clocking in at 3 hours and 7 minutes (minus intermission break).
As well as Flesh and Wood, the occasional Chisel, a lot of the solo hits and a cover or three gave this show a retrospective flavour from the start of Jimmy’s influences more so that his career.
‘Flesh & Wood’ comes to an end of the Gold Coast on Friday (July 24, 2015) the Jimmy is back in Chisel mode. Let’s hope that when the time comes he does this tour again. It is Jimmy Barnes as you have never heard him before.
