Music legend Jimmy Buffett snuck into Australia and performed a free concert on the Gold Coast on Friday. Next to no-one even knew he was in the country.
Buffett took the stage at around 4:30pm at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast for the Quicksilver Pro surfing event. He was joined on stage by 12 times world surfing champion Kelly Slater and 5 times women’s champion Stephanie Gilmore.
The show was one of the smallest the Florida music star has played to in decades. About 1000 people were around to witness the performance.
67-year old Jimmy Buffett first rose to fame of ‘Come Monday’, a top 30 hit in America in 1974.
In 1977 he wrote and recorded ‘Margaritaville’, a song about a drink he discovered in Austin, Texas. ‘Margaritaville’ now ranks at 234th Songs of the Century from the Recording Industry Association of America. Jimmy Buffett now owns a chain of restaurants across America named after ‘Margaritaville’. They have made him one of the richest entertainers in America.
Buffett’s classic include ‘Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes’, ‘Cheeseburger In Paradise’ and one of the world’s great love songs ‘Why Don’t We Get Drunk And Screw’.
