Black Sorrows bass player Joe Creighton will bring a taste of New Orleans to Australian stages when he launches JC & The Po Boys later this month in Melbourne.
Creighton, who is also the bass player for Olivia Newton-John and spent 11 years in John Farnham’s band, was introduced to the music of New Orleans via the Neville Brothers. After touring with the Neville Brothers 20 years ago he visited New Orleans where Neville Brothers drummer Willie Green introduced him to the town.
As a side-project to Black Sorrows and when he isn’t working with Olivia, Joe played his own New Orleans style music with The Uptown Rulers. The became regulars at Melbourne’s iconic Espy Hotel.
Joe Creighton has now put together a new band, JC & The Po Boys. The nine-piece band plays New Orleans second line funk from artists such as The Meters, Dr John, Professor Longhair, Sly & the Family Stone and the Commodores along with Mavis Staples, The Temptations, The Staple Singers, Ann Peebles and Etta James.
The horn player for The Po Boys is legendary Jimmy Dloggett, who played with Johnny O’Keefe, Max Merritt and Digger Revel.
Creighton will launch JC & The Po Boys at Melbourne’s Caravan Club on January 17.
