John Legend can’t stand karaoke.
The 36-year-old musician is famous for his dulcet tones and incredible stage presence. But John isn’t a fan of unleashing his musical talents in public, and steers clear from karaoke bars wherever possible.
‘John hates karaoke,’ his wife Chrissy Teigen told Details magazine. ‘His best friend could have a birthday – and they do all the time because he comes from an a capella background . He was in the a capella group called the Counterparts at UPenn (University of Pennsylvania). So a lot of his friends end up having karaoke parties. And he always seems be out of town that day.’
Chrissy, who has featured on the pages of Sports Illustrated magazine, Vogue and Cosmopolitan among others, has turned her own talents to the small screen, as the co-host of Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle alongside LL Cool J.
However, while the programme sees celebrities lip sync to famous songs, Chrissy feels the same about karaoke as her spouse.
‘I can’t do it, she said. ‘And I don’t go to karaoke in LA because karaoke is all about sucking. And in LA everyone is just a little too good. It’s not fun to watch. I feel like I’m watching someone who just never fulfilled their dreams. And they think that maybe there will be a music exec in the audience.’
Chrissy added that karaoke is a pursuit that is always better when alcohol is involved.
‘I don’t have the b**ls to get up there and do it,’ she said. ‘I believe that karaoke is a drinking game. It should not be taken seriously.’
