John Mayer has brought in rap producer No I.D. to record his new song ‘New Light’ but there is no rap about it.
No I.D. is Ernest Wilson. In 1997 he released his own rap album ‘Accept Your Own and Be Yourself (The Black Album)’. It only reached no 94 on the Billboard chart so Wilson decided the other side of the production desk was more suited to his talents.
In 2007 No I.D. produced two songs for Jay-Z’s ‘American Gangster’ album. He took a job running Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music record label and left that to become Executive Vice President of A&R for Def Jam Records. It was through Def Jam that he started his own label Artium Recordings.
No I.D. then worked with Nas on ‘Life Is Good’ and he signed Logic. Wilson is credited as the producer of Jay-Z’s last album ‘4:44’.
The John Mayer thing is a complete change of direction for No I.D.. ‘New Light’ sounds just like John Mayer and nothing like anything Wilson has done before.
It is the first of Mayer’s new music for 2018. There is more to come.
