Reports that the CD is dead have been grossly exaggerated going by sales for the new Justin Bieber album ‘Believe’.
Justin Bieber fans are mostly from the digital generation but two thirds of them bought ‘Believe’ on CD instead of downloading it last week.
In fact, the older Keith Urban fans have been more likely to download his latest album ‘The Story So Far’ instead of buying the CD. Urban’s album sells around 50% per week as downloads. Likewise, ‘Rock Of Ages’ does about 50% as downloads but Missy Higgins ‘The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle’ is only one third downloads.
Australia is bucking the world trend with the physical disc still doing very well in the region. The most likely reason for this is that Australia still has Record Stores. In the USA, major chains like Tower and Virgin have long gone the way of the dinosaur but Australia still has hundreds of record stores stocking physical product for sale over the counter ever week.
