Kanye West was paid approximately $3 million to perform at a wedding in Kazakhastan, according to a report.
The New Slaves rapper was reportedly hired to entertain guests at the nuptials of the grandson of Kazakhastan President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Saturday.
According to TMZ, Kanye was paid a “hefty sum” for the show at the Hotel Royal Tulip in the capital of Almaty.
A purported wedding guest posted a video of Kanye at the mic on social media, showing the rapper spitting lyrics to his hit Can’t Tell Me Nothing.
Kanye’s apparent appearance at the ceremony has garnered controversy as Nazarbayev’s regime has been accused of committing human rights abuses and siphoning billions of dollars worth of oil from the nation and putting it into offshore accounts, Consequence of Sound reports.
Kanye had not provided comment about his performance at press time.
Jennifer Lopez was tangled in similar controversy in June after she was reportedly paid $1.5 million to perform for Turkmenistan leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.
The country has been described as having “one of the world’s most repressive” regimes because of its terrible human rights record.
Jennifer’s publicist went into damage control after her performance, declining to name the star’s price tag and issuing a carefully worded statement.
“Had there been knowledge of human rights issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended,” the representative said.
