Karise Eden’s “My Journey” spends its sixth straight week at No.1 on the ARIA Albums chart, and also picks up a second Platinum sales certification. That album now becomes the longest continuous chart run this year (Adele has had two runs of four week’s, and a total of nine weeks at No.1 this year), and the longest run at the top since Adele’s eight week stretch from last September.

The last Australian singer to rack up seven weeks prior to this was Missy Higgins with her first album “The Sound of White” (from Sept 2004, from three No.1 runs), whilst Delta’s Innocent Eyes” was the last locally sung album to have a continuous run at the top, eight weeks from 20-Oct-2003 (weeks 20 to 27 out of the total 29 weeks at No.1).
As they now have two former No.1 singles (as of this week), fun see their “Some Nights” album climb to a new peak of No.2. Ed Sheeran reclaims his No.3 peak for “+” (May 2012), up ten places from last week, Maroon 5’s “Overexposed” returns to No.4, where the album originally debuted six weeks ago, and back up one place to No.5 is Missy Higgins’ “The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle”. All of these acts are either touring or are about to tour Australia, with Ed Sheeran and fun currently in the country, and Maroon 5 and Missy Higgins touring in October, but Missy just performed at Splendour in the Grass last weekend, more on that later.
Justin Bieber’s promo blitz helped his former No.1 album “Believe” back up to No.2 last week, it drops four places to No.6 this week. One Direction are hitting our TV screens in mid August (after the Olympics) as part of the new series for X-Factor, and their “Up All Night” album holds at No.7 this week, but after two weeks at No.3, The Voice runner-up Darren Percival’s “Happy Home” album drops down five places to No.8. Katy Perry is also down, she drops two places to No.10 with her “Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection” album.
The highest new entry of the week is the third album for Ben Drew, better known as rapper/actor Plan B, who debuts at No.9 with “ill Manors”, which also doubles as the soundtrack to his first debut self-written and directed feature film of the same name. This album debuted at No.1 in the UK last week, becoming his second there (of three released), and this is his second chart entry in Australia, his 2010 album “The Defamation of Strickland Banks” reaching No.25 here in February of 2011. So this make “ill Manors’ his first Top 10 entry in Australia.
SPLENDOUR IN THE MOVERS: The music festival ‘Splendour in the Grass’ was held last weekend (27th to 29th July, 2012) in Byron Bay, and a flow on affect from some acts has helped their albums back up the charts this week. In the Top 10 are fun and Missy Higgins, while last weeks top ten entrant Angus Stone is this week down to No.11. Lana Del Rey appeared on Saturday, and her “Born to Die” album regains nine places on the charts to climb back up to No.13. 360 was there, and his album “Falling & Flying” is back up four places to No.21; Jack White headlined on Friday night, thus his “Blunderbuss” album reclaims eleven places to No.23; Hilltop Hoods performed on Saturday, and their former No.1 album “Drinking From the Sun” is back up seven places to No.24. Miike Snow return to the Top 100 at No.48 with “Happy to You” (HP-16), and rising back two places are Sunday night headliners The Smashing Pumpkins, as their “Oceania” albums is back up to No.51. The Shins charge back up sixteen places to No.58 with “Port of Morrow” (HP-4), and lastly Kimbra sees her “Vows” reclaim two places back up the chart to No.82 (HP-4).
Non Splendour acts rising include Florence + the Machine who score a second Top 10 single this week from “Ceremonials” (TW-18 from 24), “Cornerstone” for the Hillsong Live group climbs back up nine places to No.19, and Nickleback’s “Here and Now” (TW-28 from 36) is back up due to tickets going on sale for their upcoming concerts.
DOWN DOWN: Angus Stone’s “Broken Brights” falls seven places to No.11 this week; Keith Urban’s “The Story So Far” (10 to TW-14) leaves the Top 10 for the first time in its twelve weeks chart-run. Slipknots “Antennas from Hell” drops thirteen places to No.29, Gaslight Anthem’s “Handwritten” is down sixteen places to No.32, and last weeks highest debut of “Gossamer” for Passion Pit falls twenty-four places to No.36. Batman – The Dark Knight Rises, falls dramatically, down thirty-seven places to No.56 (from No.19), whilst nineteen places from No.40 to No.59 for Nas makes “Life is Good” (HP-27) not so good for him. House vs. Hurricane see their “Crooked Teeth” (HP-20) album fall twenty-eight places to No.75, whilst “Band of Brothers” (HP-32) for Hellyeah drops down thirty-six places to No.87, but the biggest drop of the week goes to Paul Costa, who falls out of the Top 100 from last weeks No.32 debut for “Wheels and Steel” (HP-32).
The new Australian feature film The Sapphires opens around the country on August 9th, but due to ten of the sixteen songs being by lead-actress and pop singer Jessica Mauboy, her fans have gone out and brought it a week earlier to its screen debut. Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sam & Dave and Darren Percival contribute some of the other songs to the soundtrack, which debuts at No.17 this week, plus it also features Jessica’s new single “Gotcha”.
Jennifer Lopez first charted in Australia with the No.1 single “If You Had My Love” (July 1999), and has since gone on to have over twenty chart entries here, with her latest single “Dance Again” (TW-100) being lifted from her first ever best of collection “Dance Again… The Hits”, which debuts at No.20 and features 13 of her hits (16 on the deluxe edition).
The iTunes exclusively released Beatles compilation “Tomorrow Never Knows” debuts at No.34 this week, and features fourteen of the bands ‘most influential rock songs’. Major singles featured on the set include “Revolution”, “Paperback Writer”, “You Can’t Do That”, and the albums title is taken from the track featured on their 1966 ‘Revolver’ album.
Three weeks ago, the Elton John vs. Pnau album “Good Morning to the Night” debuted at No.1 in the UK, this week it debuts here at No.40. The fifth album for US MC and rapper Rick Ross becomes his first to chart here debuting at No.41 is “God Forgives, I Don’t”. Joss Stone’s sixth album is entitled “The Soul Sessions Volume II”, and it enters the ARIA Albums chart at No.42, making it her fifth album to chart here, and her fourth Top 50 entry, as her 2011 album “The LP” only made it to No.58 in August of 2011, her fourth album not charting here at all.
The 2012 Olympic Games held in London this year had their opening ceremony at the end of July, and the soundtrack from that spectacle debuts at No.44 entitled “Isles of Wonder: Music from the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games”, and is a two disc set of all of the music from that opening show. It also becomes the third Olympics album to chart in Australia, as we had our first in 1996 with “Rhythm of the Games: 1996 Olympic Games Album” (HP-53, July 1996), then the next games was ours, and “The Games of the XXVII Olympiad, Official Music from the Opening Ceremony: Sydney” reached No.1 for three weeks in late September of 2000.
The last Top 50 entry of the week comes from local singer/songwriter Tamara Stewart and her album “Apple Seed” at No.49. Tamara appeared on the Blind Auditions for The Voice (Round 6) this year, so she is already benefitting from that appearance by taking her first album straight into the Top 50 first week.
Lower 50: Thanks to a new entry of “People Help the People”, Birdy’s self-titled (HP-29) album returns to the Top 100 at No.52, and the newly re-packaged “Future History” (HP-9) for Jason DeRulo returns this week at No.54. “Making Mirrors” (HP-1) for Gotye is back up twenty-seven places to No.61, and David Guetta’s “Nothing But the Beat” (HP-3) climbs up fifteen places to No.67. Also returning to the Top 100 are albums from The Beatles “1” (HP-1) at No.84; “Sigh No More” (HP-1) for Mumford & Sons at No.89 and “Hits” (HP-1) for Jimmy Barnes at No.99.
The only new entry in the lower half of the Top 100 is the fourth soundtrack from the dance movie series ‘Step Up’, the new film entitled “Step Up 4: Miami Heat”, which enters at No.98 and it’s lead single also debuts; “Hands in the Air” for Timbaland and Ne-Yo at No.83. The previous three soundtracks have also charted…
