Singer Katy Perry has made digital history after having amassed the most Twitter followers ever.
Bosses at the micro-blogging social media network announced on Friday Perry had reached the milestone after swelling her number of followers to 90 million.
The official announcement was made on the company’s own Twitter profile, with the message reading: “It’s party time, @katyperry! With 90 million on the guest list, we’re gonna need a really big dance floor.”
Katy responded with sheer delight, retweeting the message and adding the caption, “Dang this is tight”, before signing off her excited tweet with a sunglasses-wearing smiley face emoji.
In addition to announcing her unprecedented Twitter achievement, bosses at the micro-blogging company revealed some of the top things her followers have tweeted about her, noting most fan expressions have referred to her as “(my) queen,” “beautiful,” “(the) best,” “better (than),” “amazing,” and “(my) spirit animal.”
Meanwhile, Katy’s pop star peers Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift occupy second and third place, respectively, on Twitter’s top celebrities list – the Sorry singer’s follower count stands at 83.9 million, while Katy’s longtime rival Taylor boasts 79 million.
The Teenage Dream hitmaker’s Twitter breakthrough comes nearly two months after Katy proposed the idea of a social media break, revealing she turns her phone off for at least 20 minutes a day in a bid to get a little peace and quiet.
“Speaking from someone who has a lot of social media spotlight, I feel like social media is very narcissistic and displays a life that isn’t really real,” she told Cosmopolitan.com in May (16). “I wish there was a thing like Shabbat that wasn’t particularly religious-based, that was kind of a worldwide day where we’re not on our phones – like a movement.
“I just think something like this would be really great for our minds, especially because kids today… If they weren’t born in the 80s – don’t even know what a life without Internet is like. And I think it’s going to be really difficult for our focus and our attention spans moving forward. So I’d love if the world implemented an actual day of real rest.”
