Katy Perry has announced that she will be perform at the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show and Lenny Kravitz will be joining her.
Perry was announced as this year’s halftime show performer back in the fall but final plans for the show are now just being put into place.
The Super Bowl halftime show has been a tradition since the first game in 1967; however, until 1990, the shows featured marching bands and groups like Up With People. For Super Bowl XXIV, a salute to New Orleans included a performance by Irma Thomas. The next year was New Kids on the Block and a new era in halftime entertainment was born. Since that time, the show has included performances by Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan (twice), Aerosmith, U2, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band, the Who and many more.
Starting in 2011, the featured artists have included guest spots from other artists. That year, the Black Eyed Peas brought Usher and Slash with them. the next year it was Madonna with guests LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green and MIA. Beyonce was joined by former bandmates Destiny’s Child in 2013 and, last year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined headliner Bruno Mars.
