Katy Perry is a superhero to young kids. She is like their SuperMom.
The great thing about Katy Perry is that she works somewhat like an introduction to music for young kids. Once they wean off The Wiggles they evolve onto Katy. A Darwin’s evolution diagram of pop would look something like The Wiggles into Katy Perry into Miley Cyrus into Britney Spears into Pink into Lady Gaga into Kylie into Madonna.
Katy Perry attracted a very young audience top heavy with 10 to 15 year olds. For many this was their first concert and for their first concert experience they were treated to a larger than life cartoon character fronting musical theatre.
The Katy Perry show is a squeaky clean big, bold production. There is no innuendo of a Miley show, no sexual references of a Gaga show, no naughty girl references of a Britney show. A Katy Perry show easily gets a G rating. No parent would have an issue with their children at this show. Its like Disney.
Katy seems to know her audience and is comfortable performing to their perceptions.
The set is larger than life. It is designed to set the benchmark set by Britney, Kylie and Pink shows. Its all about lights and action with fluro dancers, flying trapeze and massive inflatable characters floating around the room.
The music didn’t matter. The costumes were equally as important as the songs with at least six costume changes collectively using up around 20 minutes of showtime while the audience were compensated with effects in the big screen while they awaited Kart’s return. It hardly mattered. The kids were there for the experience. It may have been light on musical cred but it is large on entertainment values.
