Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar’s album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, has had a huge week in the U.S., debuting with more than 241,000 in sales and giving him the highest selling album for a new artist in 2012.
Released on October 22nd by Top Dawg, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records, the highly anticipated major label album was met with rave reviews and, according to Nielsen SoundScan, will land atop the Billboard Rap chart, the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and at #2 on the Billboard 100, behind Taylor Swift’s, Red, which is breaking plenty of records of its own.
Dubbed the new ‘King of California’ by Dr. Dre himself, 25 year old Lamar has amassed a large Internet following, even before his major label release, and has already worked with Dre, Game, Drake, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Pharrell Williams, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, E-40, Warren G, Bun B, Tech N9ne and Lil Wayne, amongst other popular artists.
He signed to Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment in March this year.
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City is a concept album that follows the story of a young Lamar growing up in Compton, California, while including skits at the end of several tracks that relate to the story of the album.
Australian fans will get to see Lamar when he tours Australia next month for the first time.
