Neighbours first aired in Australia on the 7 Network in 1985. After a less than successful first year the show was dropped by 7 but then picked up by TEN. TEN wanted a younger audience so bought in a new cast including Jason Donovan as Scott Robinson and Kylie Minogue as Charlene Mitchell. The episode where Scott and Charlene married earned the highest ratings ever for the show and in the UK was watched by over 20 million people.
The 1986 season of Neighbours was picked up by the BBC and the show became bigger in England than Australia making Kylie and Jason household names in the UK.
