Lady Gaga has openly talked about her substance abuse when she was confined to a wheelchair.
The American singer put her career on hold for several weeks when she underwent hip surgery in February.
This recovery process caused her to cancel US dates on her Born This Way Ball tour and put her forthcoming album ARTPOP on hold.
Although the 27-year-old star – real name Stefani Germanotta – is fully recovered now, she has recalled how low she felt at the time.
“I turned to drugs and alcohol [when in my wheelchair],” she admitted to German newspaper Blid. “Now I want to tell my fans: Don’t do the same. Today I feel pure, sheer – happy!”
Gaga is currently promoting her eagerly awaited album, which is released next month.
She arrived in Berlin earlier this week and has already made headlines since touching down. For the last few days she has stepped out in an array of bizarre outfits, including one which saw her entire face covered by a giant blonde Afro wig and a larger than life hairpin.
Even with her quirky appearance Gaga has some of the most dedicated followers in the world. She is grateful for their support but realises there are always people out there who will be against her.
“Sometimes it’s great and easy!” she replied when asked whether it is bad to be a celebrity. “My fans are everything, they are the best of fame. But it also brings horrible things. Brutal words on Twitter – for me that’s the death of the art.”
One reason she goes over the top with her looks is to go against the rules. She admits she has been disobedient for as long as she can remember.
“It was in Amsterdam – I just dyed my hair dark, was under the radar for ONE day,” she recalled when asked about her spontaneous actions. “I’ve always been a rebel, did everything my dad [Joe] forbid. I am a grenade. When I go out, I explode!”
