Lauryn Hill is “working steadily towards a resolution” in her tax issues.
It was reported on Monday that the former Fugees singer had been hit with a $440,000 tax lien from officials in New Jersey.
Lauryn owes $438,220 to officials at the state’s Division of Taxation, while another lien from 2012 for $446,400 is also apparently listed on the organization’s website, according to Bossip.com; however, Lauryn took to her Instagram page in the early hours of Tuesday to release a statement insisting her issues with the tax man are not new.
“I wanted to address the recent reports in the media that I have new tax issues,” she wrote. “This is not a new situation, I’m still taking care of past taxes. This has been an ongoing process, and I have been working steadily towards a resolution. It has been an uphill battle but we’re getting over the hump.”
Lauryn continued in her statement to admit that her time in the music industry saw her landed with other people’s debts; however, she added that as she battles to settle her financial problems, her life is getting better day by day.
“I left the game, I wanted out, the way it was organised need adjustment,” she continued. “When you eat a lot of other people’s debts like I did, and become financially responsible for as many people as I did, a break like the one I took was necessary. It took bold, courageous moves, and cost me certain economic comforts. But it’s getting better every day, thank God, and I’m living a much more liberated existence because of it.”
In 2013, Lauryn served three months behind bars after pleading guilty to three charges of failing to file her tax returns between 2005 and 2007.
