Led Zeopelin will stream on Spotify. Spotify has achieved something that no other streaming service has managed to do, obtain the rights to stream the music of Led Zeppelin.
Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, made the announcement at a Wednesday press conference in their New York offices. Their catalog will be added to the service two at time except for the final day that adds six.
The Led Zeppelin schedule
Today: Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II
Thursday: Led Zeppelin III and Led Zeppelin IV
Friday: Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti
Saturday: Presence and In Through the Out Door
Sunday: The Song Remains the Same, Coda, BBC Sessions, How the West Was Won, Mothership and Celebration Day
Zeppelin is the latest to succumb to the growing streaming arena. Pink Floyd made a similar deal with Spotify in July. Yet to make the move to streaming are artists like the Beatles, AC/DC, Garth Brooks and Bob Seger.
The company also made a major change to unify their service across all media, moving their successful free service to tablets and mobile devices. Previously, users had to subscribe to their premium service to use devices other than PCs and laptops.
Now tablet users will be able to pick songs and albums to play for free while mobile users will be able to play already established playlists or a specific artist in shuffle mode. They will not be able to select specific tracks.
Ek said at the press conference “The world has changed a lot since we launched. More than half of all users are now signing up straight to mobile, and there is a huge correlation between playing on mobile and getting people to convert.”
Spotify’s hope is that people will eventually move to their premium service that removes ads from the streams and, in the case of mobile devices, adds other features.
