Showbiz 411 owner Roger Friedman is reporting that Led Zeppelin was offered $14 million to play at this October’s Desert Trip Festival in Indio, CA but turned it down.
Desert Trip, which will be held the weekends of October 7 to 9 and October 14 to 16, will feature two artists each day with the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan on Friday, Paul McCartney and Neil Young on Saturday and Roger Waters and the Who on Sunday.
According to Friedman’s sources, Jimmy Page was all set to accept but Robert Plant refused. Reportedly, Page was furious with the source saying “Jimmy went crazy. He really wanted to do it.”
Also from Roger is word that each of the acts are making at least $7 million PER WEEKEND with the Stones and McCartney supposedly getting just a little bit more.
The surviving Led Zeppelin members are currently in the thick of the court case where they are being sued for allegedly stealing the opening guitar passage of Stairway to Heaven from an obscure album track by Spirit. According to the estate of Randy California, Zeppelin would have heard the song when they were opening for Spirit in the late 60’s.
Page took the stand this week, saying that he did not recall ever hearing the original song. John Paul Jones testified on Friday.
