Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo did something special this week in Melbourne. He performed at iconic Pure Pop Records in St Kilda and was then quizzed by You Am I’s Tim Rogers.
Melbourne music photographer Marty Williams was front row centre to capture the special event and tells Noise11 that Lee played for about 30 minutes before Tim Rogers grabbed the mic and quizzed the Sonic Youth star.
“The Q&A revealed a couple of interesting facts: Lee is a huge Neil Young fan (not surprising), a Joni Mitchell & Bob Dylan fan. He started playing acoustic as a teenager. He described himself as a ‘noisician’ rather than a ‘musician’, as reference to how he is best known over the past 30 years,” Marty tells Noise11.com.
Lee has another interesting project on the way. “He and his wife have been collaborating on a number of art installation style works, combining a guitar strung from the roof of a gallery, amplifiers that emit sound when the guitar passes over and projection,” Marty said.
Pure Pop will host the ‘Summer of Classic Albums’ with well known acts performing classic albums in their entirety. Check out the list of acts here.
