The big news in Leonard Cohen circles last week, besides the impending release of his new album You Want It Darker, was the fact that he said he was “ready to die”.
In this week’s New Yorker, the singer recited a new poem and said “I don’t think I’ll be able to finish those songs. Maybe, who knows? And maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know. But I don’t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don’t dare do that. I’ve got some work to do. Take care of business. I am ready to die. I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.”
Last night, Cohen did a Q&A in Los Angeles and, according to Billboard, he was walking back his statement “I said I was ready to die recently and I think I was exaggerating. I’ve always been into self-dramatization. I intend to live forever.”
Later in the even, he said “I hope we can do this again. I intend to stick around until 120.”
Cohen also told the crowd that he planned for two more studio albums although he didn’t address the report that he wouldn’t be doing any further lengthy touring.
