Lionel Richie has been named Billboard’s Legend of Live for 2014.

The award is given each year during the magazine’s Billboard Touring Conference which will be held this year on November 19 and 20 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York.

Richie is being honored not only for his nearly forty years of touring, both with the Commodores and solo, but also for his lasting contributions to the touring industry.

Ray Waddell, executive director for at Billboard, said “Though he has received countless awards for his albums and songs, Lionel Richie has never been honored specifically for his contributions to live music, so we are thrilled that Billboard will be able to do just that at the Billboard Touring Awards in November. Mr. Richie is an international superstar whose talent transcends musical trends. His fans span generations, and he is committed to making his live shows the best possible experience, and, as such, he personifies a Legend Of Live.”

Previous honorees include Elton John, the Allman Brothers, Ozzy Osbourne, Rush, Journey, Neil Diamond and George Strait.
