A twelve year old album tops the British Albums chart this week and it is all because of the Glastonbury Festival.
Just like last year when Dolly Parton electrified the crowd which led to her Blue Smoke album soaring up the chart, this year’s veteran artist headliner, Lionel Richie, bounds to number 1 with the 2003 album The Definitive Collection. Released in 2003, the two-CD set combines Richie’s biggest solo hits with those of his original group, the Commodores. It’s his first trip to the British summit since the single-CD version of The Definitive Collection did it in 2003.
Speaking of Dolly Parton, her Blue Smoke / The Best of Dolly Parton remains at the top of the Country Compilation Albums in the U.K., one year after that Glastonbury appearance.
Richard Thompson scores the highest charting album of his career in Britain as his Still debuts at number 10. His last two albums, 2013’s Electric and 2014’s Acoustic Classics, held the previous record at 16. This is Thompson’s 22nd studio album.
The only other album by a veteran artist to debut this week is Neil Young with Promise of Real, a band that includes two of Willie Nelson’s sons, with The Monsanto Years. The album is only the second by Young to be released in the last ten years that has not made the top twenty, the other being Fork in the Road (2009 / #22).
