Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahu Rhodes have been named as the stars of the next Australian production of The King And I.
The Gordon Frost Organisation and Opera Australia will revive the classic Broadway musical The King And I for 2014.
Chinese born Australian opera singer Shu-Cheen Yu will play Lady Thiang and Adrian Li Donni will play Lun Tha, the Burmese scholar.
“I’m thrilled with the wonderful cast we’ve assembled for The King and I,” said producer John Frost. “I know this production will be as magnificent as the original, which is remembered as a milestone in Australian theatrical history. It brings me great joy to be able to return to this special production with Opera Australia following our huge success with South Pacific.”
The original production of The King And I premiered on Broadway in New York in 1951. It starred Gertrude Lawrence (who died during the season) and Yul Brynner. In 1956, Brynner also starred in the film version with Deborah Kerr.
