When Chuck Berry died on March 18, he left behind his wife of 68 years, Toddy.
Berry married Themetta “Toddy” Suggs on October 28, 1948 and the two stayed married through the rise of his career to one of the greatest artists of the rock era, his many troubled times and, ultimately, until his passing.
On October 18, 2016, Berry celebrated his 90th birthday by announcing that he had finally completed his first album since 1979, which would be called Chuck, and that it was dedicated his wife. He said at the time “This record is dedicated to my beloved Toddy. My darlin’ I’m growing old! I’ve worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!”
One of the tracks from the album, Wonderful Woman, is about Themetta “Toddy” Berry and is the second single to be released from Chuck, which will be out on June 9.
