New Zealand artist Lorde has become the youngest artist since Tiffany in 1987 to top the US chart.
16-year old Ella Yelich-O’Connor aka Lorde is 10-months older than what Tiffany was when she did the same thing with ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ in 26 years ago.
Lorde has done it with an original song ‘Royals’. The Tiffany song was a cover of the Tommy James original.
The youngest person to top the US chart was Stevie Wonder at age 13 with ‘Fingertips Part 2’ in 1963.
When she heard the news Lorde tweeted “get the fkouttahere. royals is NUMBER 1 on BILLBOARD in the USAAA.”
In a later, more refrained statement she said, “”It feels like a combination of my birthday, Christmas and washing my hair after a month of not doing so. [I’m] very, very grateful for everyone’s love and kind words.”
Lorde’s ‘Royals’ will be included on her debut album ‘Pure Heroine’ due on October 28.
