Grease has a new face for the Melbourne return. John Paul Young has replaced Anthony Callea who played the Johnny Casino role when the show first hit town in January, 2014.
The producer’s of Grease have even managed to drop John Paul Young’s classic hit ‘Love Is In The Air’ into the show, at least for a couple of lines. The nod to the classic is similar to Todd McKenney’s Teen Angel character where they musical name check a piece of ‘I Go To Rio’ in recognition of Todd’s Peter Allen role.
Grease is the proverbial good time to be had by all. Rob Mills is truly the star of the show as Danny and Gretal Scarlett is the perfect ‘Sandy’.
Val Lehman owns the schoolmistress Miss Lynch part and Bert Newton supplies the comedy relief in a totally miscast part of the DJ Vince Fointaine, who in reality should have been played by someone 60 years younger than Newton. The role does create the platform for the creepiest line of the show when the 76-year old Newton makes some reference to the student going to bed with him every night.
Grease is a lot of fun and recreates the essence of the original movie of the screen.
Grease is on at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne until January 25, 2015.
