Madonna Departs US Top 10 After One Week

Madonna’s Rebel Heart has taken a huge drop in sales in its second week of release.

Hits Daily Double estimates that the album has dropped 80% between week 1 and week 2, well beyond the normal 45% to 55% that most albums see. Their estimates have the album moving only around 23,000 copies.

Based on sales alone, that would take the album from number 1 last week to number 16 but, with the new calculations used to determine album popularity, the news is even worse.

The Sales + Streaming estimates show the singer only picking up an extra 1,961 units for a total of 24,761, making the album drop from 2 to 19.

The sales trend for the album mirrors that of MDNA in 2012 but the numbers are nowhere near equivalent. MDNA opened with sales of 369,000 which fell to around 40 to 45,000 in the second week. Even with the two week total at over 400,000, it took Madonna until late in the year to finally inch over the 500,000 mark. Since then, it has only sold an additional 40,000.

In Australia the album fell from no 1 to 18 this week.

With Rebel Hearts two week total at 131,000, it is doubtful that the album will even make half the number needed to go gold (500,000 sales) with it possibly struggling to even reach the 200,000 mark. That will make it the only non-live Madonna album to fail to go gold.

Madonna’s Platinum and Gold record:

Diamond (10,000,000+ sales): Like a Virgin, The Immaculate Collection
7x Platinum – True Blue
5x Platinum – Madonna, Evita Soundtrack
4x Platinum – Like a Prayer, Ray of Light
3x Platinum – Bedtime Stories, Music, Something to Remember
2x Platinum – Erotica, I’m Breathless
Platinum (1,000,000 sales) – American Life, Confessions on a Dance Floor, Who’s That Girl Soundtrack, You Can Dance, GHV2
Gold (500,000 sales) – Hard Candy, MDNA, Celebration
