Madonna surprised New Year’s party-goers at Manhattan bar Stonewall Inn when she gave an impromptu performance just after midnight.
Madonna performed an acoustic version of her classic ‘Like A Prayer’ and a cover of Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ at the bar in Christopher Street, Greenwich Village.
Madonna opened with the poem “Fear of the Unknown”. “If we truly love and we truly take the time to get to know one another we would find that we all bleed the same color and we all need to love and be loved,” she said.
The Stonewall Inn was the scene of the Stonewall riots in 1969. The riots started following a violent demonstration by members of the gay community and police. The actions of the night led to the first gay pride parades in the USA and spread to further demonstrations around the world.
The movie Stonewall, released in 1995, is about the incident.
The 2015 movie Stonewall is about events shortly after the riots.
