Mariah Carey is reported to be heading back to Sony after her disastrous chart record since joining the label.
Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411 is reporting that Mariah Carey has had it with Def Jam/Universal after the total disaster of Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse and will be returning to Sony under the Epic label to work with L.A. Reid.
Carey started her career in spectacular fashion on Columbia where she released six studio and one holiday album, all of which sold three million-plus copies. She then moved over to Island Records with the album Charmbracelet in 1999 where she peaked at the six million selling The Emancipation of Mimi (2005). Her next album, 2008’s E=MC² only sold 1.3 million followed by 2009’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel which only moved 550,000.
For last years Me. I Am Mariah, Carey moved to another Universal imprint, Def Jam, where the album severely under performed. To date, the album is still struggling to make 200,000 in sales.
Friedman reports that the deal is still in the works with a source telling him “It’s in the works and should be done soon.”
It was announced last week that Carey will be doing a residency at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Combine that with the new record deal and we may be seeing a possible resurgence for Miss Carey.
