77-years after the Mary Poppins book was written by Queenslander P.L. Travers the world famous nanny is coming home.
The Cameron Mackintosh of Mary Poppins will open in Brisbane tonight.
Author Pamela Lyndon (P.L.) Travers was born Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough, Queensland in 1899. She later moved to Bowral, NSW and lived there from 1907 to 1917. She was a novelist, actress and journalist.
P.L. Travers was a journalist for The Bulletin magazine and wrote as Helen Goff but changed her named to Pamela Lyndon Travers when she became an actress.
In 1924, she left for England and in 1934 her novel Mary Poppins was published for the first time.
Cameron Mackintosh approached Travers in the 90s for the rights to Mary Poppins but Pamela never say his production. She died in April 1996, at the age of 96.
Mary Poppins will run in Brisbane until March.
