Matt Bellamy says his split from Kate Hudson could’ve been “a lot messier”.
The 36-year-old rocker’s band Muse dropped their new record Drones in Europe on June 5 and its set for a UK release on Monday.
Recording mainly took place at the end of last year and corresponded with Matt’s breakup from fiancée Kate in December. While the former couple remain on good terms for the sake of their son Bingham, it was a tough time for the musician.
“I’ve tried hard to create a parallel arc which is relatable at a personal level. It can be relatable to anybody who goes through that,” he explained to Q magazine of the album’s sound. “The album was quite difficult for me to make at certain points. My personal life went through a bit of a shift. All I can say is that she’s a lovely person, we had a great relationship and we’re good friends. It could’ve been a lot messier.”
Matt admits it was hard to move on at first and that he had to try and “reinvent” himself. It’s not his first big breakup – he was engaged to an Italian psychologist called Gaia for nine years until 2009, before meeting Kate in 2010. This time he was determined to see things through in the best possible way, re-evaluating how issues were handled in the past.
“I looked at those times, those points in your life when something happens and you think, ‘Where I and what am am I doing?'” he recalled.
“I’d like to talk more about [the split] but the way the game works is that all that stuff just gets blown out of proportion.”
