If you thought all pop music sounds the same today, you are right. One man, Max Martin, was responsible for a good chunk of songs you heard on the radio in 2014.
At the 2015 Grammy Awards Max Martin won the award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical for his work on:
Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj
“Break Free” by Ariana Grande featuring Zedd
“Dark Horse” by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J
“Problem” by Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea
“Shake It Off ” by Taylor Swift
“Blank Space” by Taylor Swift
In recent years Martin was behind albums by Katy Perry (Teenage Dream), Ke$ha (Animal), Britney Spears (Femme Fatale), Christina Aguilera (Lotus) and Taylor Swift (1989).
While Taylor Swift happily takes all the credit for her ‘1989’ album it was actually Max Martin who wrote and produced seven of the album’s 13 tracks.
Max Martin has had 54 Top 10 songs dating back to 1997 with Backstreet Boys ‘Quit Playing Games (With My Heart). In 1999 he wrote and produced Britney Spears ‘Baby One More Time’ giving him his first number one.
Over the years Max Martin was the real creative force behind Katy Perry ‘I Kiss A Girl’, ‘Teenage Dream’, ‘California Gurls’, ‘ET’, ‘Last Friday Night’, ‘Part Of Me’, ‘Roar’; Pink ‘So What’, ‘Raise Your Glass’ and Taylor Swift ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’, ‘Shake It Off’, ‘Blank Space’ … and they are just his number one hits.
As a songwriter Max Martin has had 19 number one hits in the USA placing him third behind Paul McCartney (32) and John Lennon (26). He has also had 17 number one hits as a producer placing his second behind George Martin (23).
Music fans can be forgiven for thinking all pop music today sounds the same. It really does, because it is mostly from one man … Max Martin.
