Talk about taking a sharp right turn. Singer Melissa Etheridge, who has been know for years as a fine rock singer/songwriter, is branching out with an album of soul classics.
Not that she isn’t able to carry the genre. Etheridge has always had a tremendously strong, evocative voice, but soul is not one genre that she has previously attempted.
For Memphis Rock and Soul, Melissa takes on a list of classics from the Stax label including Respect Yourself, Who’s Making Love, I’ve Been Loving You Too Long and the first single, Hold On, I’m Coming, along with a number of deep tracks that she found while searching the Stax catalog.
The album, which was recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, is due October 7 via, yes, Stax Records. She is currently running a PledgeMusic campaign.
The track list:
Memphis Train
Respect Yourself (People Stand Up)
Who’s Making Love
Hold On, I’m Coming
I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)
