Merry Clayton, one of the subjects of the film Twenty Feet From Stardom and the female vocalist heard on the Rolling Stones classic Gimme Shelter, was seriously injured in a car accident last Monday in Los Angeles.
News of the accident only broke after it was announced on her website:
It is with deep regret, but also deep gratitude, that we announce the following about our beloved Merry Clayton. At approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, Merry was involved in a major automobile accident in Los Angeles, California. Merry sustained severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities. We are truly grateful that our dear Merry is still with us.
She has a long road of recovery ahead and we thank you all for your prayers as we link arms together with faith and the Lord’s strength for her rapid healing. For all that know her personally, and those that have been blessed by her God-given talents,please know that her spirit is very strong and her faith unwavering. Her voice is not silenced and His praises continue to be on her lips.
We do ask that you please respect her and her family’s privacy during this difficult time.
Clayton, who came from a gospel background, has been a member of Ray Charles’ Raelets and her own Sisters Love and sang background for much of the royalty of rock including the Rolling Stones on Gimme Shelter, Joe Cocker on Feelin’ Alright, Lynyrd Skynyrd on Sweet Home Alabama and the second recording of Tommy by the Who and the London Symphony Orchestra.
As a solo artist, Clayton had a number of minor R&B hits including Oh No, Not My Baby (1973 / #30 R&B / #72 Pop) and Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow (1975 / #42 R&B / #45 Pop).
