Doctors at The Alfred Hospital will keep Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum in an induced coma until next week so that bruising to his brain can stabilize.
Molly’s brother Brian has confirmed that Ian has a broken shoulder, fractured clavicle, fractured ribs, pierced lung and a fractured vertebrae after falling 3 metres at his Richmond home yesterday while hanging Christmas decorations.
“They have him sedated and he will remain that way until early next week,” Brian told media outside The Alfred this afternoon.
Molly’s neurosurgeon Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld said this morning that it was still “a life and death matter” but that staff were “cautiously optimistic” that Molly will make a recovery.
“He’s not out of danger, as far as life goes,” Brian said. “At the moment we’re taking little steps forward but there is nothing to say things couldn’t go backwards. In that respect, he is not out of danger”.
Well-wishers from the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to pop princess Kylie Minogue have tweeted get-well messages to Molly.
Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum is probably better known to most Australian’s than the Prime Minister or Kylie.
Boy George, Ricky Martin and Natalie Imbruglia has also tweeted messages of support to Molly today.
