Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum will undergo surgery today (December 22, 2012) to repair his broken collarbone and ribs following the fall one week ago at his Richmond home.
Molly remains in a serious but stable condition at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and his sedation levels are being gradually reduced.
The process takes a number of days but is necessary for doctors to assess the head injury he suffered in the fall.
“Molly’s a pretty tough customer, but I know he would be overwhelmed by the level of support he is receiving. Certainly from a family point of view that support has been an invaluable source of strength and comfort, for which we cannot thank you enough,” his brother Brian Meldrum said.
“They say patience is a virtue, and patience is certainly something we need to have right now. For Molly it will be a long, slow road but I have no doubt it will be much smoothed by having so many of his friends, fans and well-wishers traveling on it with him.”
Yesterday, thousands of Molly fans texted messages of support to the music guru which were displayed in the big screen at Federation Square in Melbourne. Every one of the messages were saved and will be given to Molly as he recovers.
Since the accident at approximately 6:30pm last Thursday there has been an outpour of support from across Australia and all over the world for Ian. Madonna, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Boy George, Pink, INXS and Ricky Martin have sent messages to Molly as has the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Molly is expected to takes months to recovery from the injuries and will be in The Alfred for at least the next few months.
