Davy Jones of The Monkees has died at the age of 66 in Florida from a heart attack.
English born Jones started his career at age 11 as an actor in the stage-show Oliver. He first played the role in the West End of London before taking it to Broadway.
In 1965, Jones auditioned for a new TV show called ‘The Monkees’. The show was about an American version of The Beatles based on the antics of the movies ‘Help’ and ‘A Hard Days Night’. Jones was cast as lead singer.
It was in The Monkees that Jones found international fame. Although The Monkees were fiction, the songs they recorded for the TV show became global hits. Jones was suddenly a pop star with songs like ‘I’m A Believer’, ‘Daydream Believer’, ‘Last Train To Clarksville’, ‘Pleasant Valley Sunday’ and ‘I’m Not Your Stepping Stone’.
The Monkees ended up selling over 65 million records.
After the show went off the air, Jones continued his career as a pop star and occasional actor. The appeared as himself in one episode of The Brady Bunch and reprised that storyline in the 90s in The Brady Bunch Movie.
Jones last album was ‘She’ in 2009.
Davy was married three times and has four daughters from his first two marriages.
He was found dead in his home in Indiantown, Florida. His publicist announced that Davy had suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep.
