Adele’s public supports for Kesha sends a message to other female artists, it’s been claimed.
The British singer stormed the recent BRIT awards in London, taking home four awards just months after she returned to music.
As well as wowing with a performance of her new track When We Were Young, Adele also used her time on stage to declare her support for fellow singer Kesha’s ongoing legal battle against Sony Music and producer Dr. Luke.
“I’d also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha,” Adele told the crowd when she accepted the Best Female gong.
A music insider tells Britain’s Grazia magazine that this was a huge moment for women in music.
“For Adele to use her platform at the BRITs sends a message to other female artists that – no matter what label ties they have – they shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for one another,” they said.
Kesha recently lost her bid to be released from her contract at Sony. The court case came about after she filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against her one-time mentor and producer Dr. Luke in October, 2014, accusing him of subjecting her to years of sexual, physical, verbal and emotional abuse.
However the judge dismissed the preliminary injunction she sought to sever ties with the music firm.
Sony bosses have claimed they are “not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha”, but have made it possible for her to record without any connection with the producer.
After the court ruling Kesha, 29, took to her Facebook page to vent her anger.
“This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal,” she wrote. “This is about being free from my abuser. All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused.”
Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham have also publicly supported Kesha, with Taylor donating $250,000 in a show of solidarity and Lena penning a blog post on the issue.
