Adele initially wanted to perform heart surgery for a living, but she quickly discovered a medical career was not for her.
Adele has won 10 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award since her debut album 19 was released in 2008, but although she has earned a position as one of the most significant musicians in modern history, Adele wasn’t always headed in this direction.
“When I was younger I wanted to be a heart surgeon because my grandad died,” she explained during an interview with Sirius XM radio in New York City. “For a few years I put my mind to it that I was going to be a real heart surgeon and then I went to school, got to 13 and I was like, ‘Nah, I ain’t doing that’.
“I think that anyone that commits themselves is like a don at that kind of thing. I lost interest in it.”
Adele is currently promoting her third album 25, which reaches listeners on 20 November 2015.
The pop star is mother to three-year-old Angelo, her son with partner Simon Konecki, and although she loves her job, recording music is far more difficult for the star after becoming a parent.
“It is constant struggle of, ‘Am I spending enough time with my child? Am I doing enough work?’,” she explained. “Even the time making the record, the guilt. I don’t think any of us really get over it. It makes me emotional when I talk about it actually.
“Leaving him when he would rather be with me is hard. But he comes everywhere with me.
“He is in New York and he is having the greatest time ever.”
Adele also revealed she is entering a stage of parenthood where it has become obvious when her child is pulling on her heartstrings in an attempt to get what he wants.
“You know what the killer thing is when you get home and cannot wait to see them and they punish you,” she said.
“It is the worst when they kick off for you, and all you want to do is love them, and they are like, ‘I don’t want to play with you’. It is, like, the hardest thing ever. They make you cry and that is why they do it. They are so clever.”
