Singer Avril Lavigne is winning her fight against Lyme disease, more than six months after confirming her illness.
Lavigne first revealed her battle with the bacterial infection back in April (15), after initially becoming unwell five months before.
In June (15) she told Good Morning America she was half way through her treatment and “doing a lot better”, and on Wednesday (11Nov15) Avril shared more good news about her condition with her fans.
“Overcoming Lyme Disease. Feels good to have my Dr. smile and tell me how much progress I am making,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of her lying on a bed in a medical centre with a health professional checking her arm. “I’m coming out on the other side batches!!! #Fighter #F**kLymeDisease (sic).”
The star quickly followed up the photograph with another snap of her lying on her side smiling directly at the camera with the caption: “FIGHT and CONQUER!!!!!!!!! #F**kLymeDisease (sic)”
Lyme disease can be spread by infected ticks, and causes symptoms such as fatigue and rashes, which can be treated with antibiotics. The condition can become chronic.
When Avril first confirmed she had the disease, she explained she had been in Las Vegas celebrating her 30th birthday with friends just before she was diagnosed.
“I could barely eat and when we went to the pool I had to leave and go lie in bed,” she told People magazine. “My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”
After doctors told her she had Lyme disease, Avril attributed it to a bite she received.
“I had no idea a bug bite could do this,” she continued. “I was bedridden for five months. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying. There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
