Bette Midler will return to Broadway next year in a revival of Hello Dolly!
Midler confirmed rumors on Tuesday morning, Tweeting:
Yes, I am taking on the role of the beloved Dolly Levi in “Hello, Dolly!”. We open next year on Broadway! So excited!
This will be the third time that Midler has appeared on the Great White Way, not counting a number of concert appearances. In 1967, she appeared in both the roles of Tzeitel and Rivka in the original production of Fiddler on the Roof and, in 2013, did the one-woman show I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers. She also was one of the producers for the 2011 show Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
The show will begin previews on March 13, 2017 and will open on April 20. A theater is yet to be announced.
The original production of Hello Dolly! opened on June 16, 1964 with Carol Channing in the lead role. The show went on to become, at one time, the longest running show in Broadway history with 2,844 performances, closing on December 27, 1970. Channing was followed by Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller and Ethel Merman.
The show has previously been revived three times with Bailey (1975) and twice with Channing (1978). Barbra Streisand starred in the 1969 move version, directed by Gene Kelly.
