Queen star Brian May saluted the band’s late singer as he collected the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour’s Living Legends award in London on Wednesday night (11Nov15).
The guitarist dedicated the group’s latest accolade to the “incredible and irrepressible” Freddie Mercury.
“I know he would have loved to have been here for this,” May said, before thanking the rock community for their years of support.
“We are fans too,” he stated. “We are here because of the likes of Jimmy Page and the forever awesome Jimi Hendrix. I want to say thank you to the people who voted for us.”
And the rocker saved a special mention for Queen’s current frontman, Adam Lambert, calling the former American Idol star a “gift from God”.
Music-News.com were on the red carpet to catch up with Brian May prior to the event.
Brian recently revealed that the band used to rock out to their own music while driving, just like the characters in the movie Wayne’s World did to their hit single Bohemian Rhapsody.
I didn’t know Mike Myers (who wrote and starred in the film) but he rang me up out of the blue and said, ‘We’ve done this amazing sequence in our new film – can we have your approval? And can you get Freddie (Mercury, singer) to hear it?'” he told bbc.co.uk.
“Strangely enough, the humour in it was quite close to our own. Because we did that kind of thing in the car, bouncing up and down to our own tracks!”
Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper were also big winners at the 2015 Classic Rock Roll Of Honour, held at London’s Roundhouse.
AC/DC picked up the coveted Band Of The Year trophy while Iron Maiden’s The Book Of Souls was named Album Of The Year, and Cooper’s Welcome To My Nightmare landed the Classic Album award. Motorhead frontman Lemmy presented Jimi Hendrix’s sister Janie with the Tommy Vance Inspiration Award on behalf of her guitar great brother.

She told the audience, “Legends will never die. Jimi once asked, ‘Will I Live Tomorrow?’ Tonight, Classic Rock and everyone here has answered that question with a resounding, “Yes’.”
