CeeLo Green has signed a new deal with Sony Music Entertainment which will see him launch a record label.
Green hasn’t had a chart hit since the 2010 smash Fuck You. His latest release, Heart Blanche, hit shelves last month but had a mixed reception.
Now CeeLo is hoping to give his career and image a kickstart with the new deal, which will see him launch a new record label entitled Mothership Entertainment Group. The label will be fully funded by Sony and will allow CeeLo to search for the brightest young stars in the R&B and soul genres, according to Page Six.
“We are delighted to welcome him back to the Sony Music family,” Doug Morris, Sony’s CEO, said.
CeeLo added: “I’m certain I can rise to the occasion. It will be my pleasure and duty.”
As well as failing to set the music world alight with his new songs, CeeLo has also been embroiled in some scandal in his personal life. Back in 2014, the singer was accused of giving a woman the drug Ecstasy, and he pleaded no contest to the charges. The accusations also lead to him leaving his role as a judge on The Voice, although he remained close to around 15 former contestants from the program.
Speculation has already begun that CeeLo could perhaps choose one of these contestants, perhaps the much loved Nicholas David, as his first signing for his Mothership label.
Speaking recently about his latest offering Heart Blance, CeeLo told the Associated Press he felt the record was the mark of a new chapter in his life. “This album is a prequel to the rest of the music I want to release in the very near future,” he explained. “(It’s) the start of a new beginning.
“I’m content with the album but I’m not complacent with the album. I can do more and I want to do more. I want to first be reintroduced, and I want the people to be reminded of who I am in an artistic capacity, and they will see my generosity, because my cup just runneth over with song: with melody, with harmony, with sentiment and a sweetness for all.”
